Iowa high school kids know their A-C-T's. Students in the state have tied with South Dakota for having the best national average score in the country. The ranking is among states with more than half of students in the Class of 2019 who took the ACT's.

Two-thirds of the Iowa students who graduated from high school last spring took the ACT's. Their average composite score was 21.6 out of 36 possible points. That score is slightly higher than the national average, but slightly below the average score among Iowa students in the Class of 2018 who took the ACT's. The average composite score last year was 21.8.

The ACT test is based in Iowa City and the organization reported a growing number of high school grads in the U.S. are not adequately prepared for success in college. The national average score in the math and English sections of the ACT's were the lowest they have been in the past 15 years.
