In the Western United States, 86 large fires have burned nearly 900,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

15 states have reported large fires and at least 26 of these are in California, and they have charred over 300,000 acres in less than a week. (California was subject to 11,000 lightning strikes in a 72-hour period)

The smoke from these wildfires is getting caught in the jet stream and is working its way east. It could reach Iowa as early as tonight. (Friday)

The smoke may create some beautiful sunsets this weekend, but it's also dangerous. It can degrade air quality and cause breathing and lung problems, particularly for people with asthma.
