Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Grand Theft With Trunk Full Of…

A man was found with a trunk full of avocados and was arrested under the suspicion of grand theft fruit.

A Lompoc man is facing serious charges after a Sheriff's Deputy caught him stealing avocados from a ranch in Goleta.

This suspected theft took place in Santa Barbara County. Grand theft under California Penal Code Section 487(a) is defined as the illegal or unlawful taking of another person's property which is valued in excess of $950. This crime can be charged as either a felony or a misdemeanor. So if you've ever wondered what $950 worth of avocados look like, there you go.

The theft took place on Sunday night in the 6900 block of Cathedral Oaks Road. A deputy saw a white vehicle stopped on the side of the road. A man was seen nearby wearing a headlamp and carrying a bucket of avocados. Not only was there an abundant amount of fruit in his car, but also a bag of methamphetamine on the dashboard.

When sheriffs searched the car they found the man's trunk full of avocados. It was reported that they also found a meth pipe.

The person who owned the ranch said the avocado burglar had no permission to take the fruit from the property.

The 44-year-old suspect identified as Tim Rounds was arrested for grand theft and possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The avocados were returned and the thief was booked into the county jail, however, he was released without bail under the local court's extension of an emergency rule that eliminated bail for certain offenses because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
