A Marshalltown teacher is accused of having inappropriate contact with a student.

Police took 42-year-old Adam Edgington of Nevada into custody Wednesday after he turned himself into authorities. Authorities charged Edgington with sexual exploitation by a school employee, then released him from custody.

In a press release, Marshalltown police said they started their investigation on June 23. Authorities indicated that's when they learned of the allegations concerning a potential improper relationship between an adult male and a 13-year-old student.

The Marshalltown School District's website listed Miller as a language arts teacher at Miller Middle School.

In the press release, police confirmed the allegations under investigation involve inappropriate contact and communication between Edgington and the juvenile. Edgington allegedly engaged in a specific pattern of conduct and behavior with a 13-year-old student that progressed for the purpose of soliciting inappropriate physical contact with the minor, police said.

Edgington is accused of committing the inappropriate acts while employed as a teacher and that he knew the student was a minor. Edgington was released from custody following his arrest, but he's scheduled to make a court appearance on Monday.

According to grllaw.com, sexual exploitation by a school employee is a Class D felony under Iowa code that's punishable by up to five years in prison. If convicted of the charge, Edgington would also be placed on the state's sex offender registry for 10 years.

The charges against Edgington were filed one week after police arrested another district employee for the same crime. Mark Esquivel, a 26-year-old instructor at Marshalltown High School, was taken into custody on June 30.
