If you're a sleep apnea sufferer like I am, you know just how valuable your CPAP or BiPAP machine is to you each night. But now, a very popular model of that machine is facing a recall due to a problem with pieces of foam breaking off and being inhaled by it's users.

The Phillip's Company has issued what they're calling a voluntary recall for a specific model of their CPAP and BiPAP machines. The models in question have an issue with their sound abatement foam. The majority of the affected Phillips brand devices under recall are in the first generation DreamStation product family.

Out of the millions of sleep devices that Phillips has produced using this type of sound abatement foam, only around 0.03% of devices have had issues that led to consumer complaints. Phillips says that the problem with the foam is that at times, it may degrade down into tiny particles that could then enter the CPAP or BiPAP machine's air pathway, and then be ingested by the user. That ingested foam then may give off certain chemicals that could potentially make the user sick. Phillips says that unapproved cleaning methods of the devices could lead to an issue with the foam, as well as users who live in extremely hot and humid conditions.

If you have a Phillips DreamStation CPAP or BiPAP machine, you should contact your doctor immediately to see if they recommend stopping your treatment with that machine. You can also register your device and get more information on the recall from Phillips HERE.
