A Colorado man has been charged in the attack of a woman at George Wyth State Park in Waterloo more than three years ago.

Waterloo police confirm that Patrick Burt, 24, is being held in a suburban Denver, Colo., jail on $500,000 bond, awaiting extradition to Black Hawk County. He's charged with willful injury, a Class C felony.

On July 28, 2015, George Wyth State Park was shut down for several hours after a woman was found semi-conscious, covered in dirt and blood, off a trail in a wooded area near the park's campground. She was taken to a Waterloo hospital for treatment of a broken nose, chipped teeth and other injuries consistent with an assault, police said.

The woman told investigators she was jogging on the trail when a white man approached from behind and hit her in the head. According to investigators, the man continued to punch the woman several times in the head and face until she lost consciousness.

Authorities closed the park and searched for the man in the hours after the attack, but they didn't find him.

While the woman was being treated at the hospital, forensic evidence was gathered and submitted to the State Crime Laboratory for processing. Last week, Waterloo police were notified by the Lab that a sample recently entered into the Combined DNA Index System database matched DNA recovered from the attack.

On Monday, authorities issued a warrant for Burt's arrest.

Burt was taken into custody in Aurora, Colo., the city where he currently lives. Police said Burt lived in the Waterloo area at the time of the assault.
