Authorities are investigating an apparent drowning in Buchanan County.

According to sheriff's officials, a man fishing the Wapsipinicon River near Quasqueton Tuesday spotted the body near a bridge and called 911 just before 8:30 AM. Authorities said a man's body was pulled from the river a short time.

The identify of the victim was not immediately known. The body was taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and positive identification.

Foul play is not expected in the man's death, sheriff's officials said. The apparent drowning remains under investigation.

Black Hawk County Prisoner Escapes Custody

Meanwhile, authorities are looking for a Black Hawk County inmate who failed to return from a work release assignment.

According to a press release, 39-year-old Andrew Stephens failed to report back to the Waterloo Residential Facility Monday night. Stephens is now considered an escapee, Iowa Department of Corrections officials said.

Stephens is described as a white man. He's about 6'0" and weighs around 270 pounds.

Court records show that Stephens was convicted of first-degree robbery in Black Hawk County. He was admitted to the work release facility on July 26, 2021.

Anyone with information on Stephens' whereabouts should contact police.
