With people not wanting to leave their houses in fear of COVID-19, grocery delivery apps like InstaCart had their usage skyrocket in 2020. Do you think Facebook and Twitter have a ton of your information? Imagine how much that app has after taking your grocery orders over the last two years.

One piece of information the site and app identified over that timespan was top purchased hot sauce in each U.S. state. There were plenty of purchases to learn from. According to a separate poll put together by InstaCart, "among over 2,000 U.S. adults, 74% of Americans eat hot sauce with their food, and nearly half (45%) said they typically dash hot sauce on their food once a week or more often."

Iowa's choice for their favorite is pretty unique compared to the rest of the country.

While 31 states place Huy Fong Sriracha as their favorite and Frank's RedHot takes 14 states, Iowa has Burman's Hot Sauce taking the top spot. Iowa was the only state who had Burman's as their favorite.

Though Burman's wasn't picked by any other state, it was listed as the fourth overall favorite of its kind in the U.S.

The list went as follows:

  1. Huy Fong Sriracha
  2. Frank's RedHot
  3. Cholula
  4. Burman's
  5. Tapatio
  6. Tabasco
  7. Texas Pete
  8. Heinz
  9. Louisiana
  10. Valentina

To give you a visual, the country buys a lot of hot sauce -- like a lot. According to the study, "Between December 2020 and November 2021, Instacart customers purchased 444,854 gallons of hot sauce. To put that into perspective, that’s enough hot sauce to fill 18,536 kiddie pools."

Some states liked their hot sauce more than others, and Iowa ranked towards the bottom of states that purchase the most hot sauce. Out of the 50 states, Iowa ranks 49th in most hot sauce purchased, at 1.4 ounces per customer. Hawaii was the only state that ranked lower, buying 1.3 ounces per customer.

North Dakota earned the top spot, purchasing 5.4 ounces per customer.
