Iowa Officials Received Calls About a 5-foot-long Alligator
Last August an alligator was allegedly spotted in Council Bluffs (which turned out to be false) and now there's been a sighting in Des Moines.
On Sunday, May 2, the Animal Rescue League Animal Services received calls about an alligator lurking around a parking lot of an apartment complex.
ARL Animal Services posted on their Facebook Page:
While their fear was real, the alligator, it turns out, was not. The large stuffed alligator is now safe in the care of ARL Animal Services.
Comments on the social media post from Iowans said that they heard the calls come across the scanner and they were quite intrigued.
Iowa may not have alligators, but the state does have alligator snapping turtles. However, you'll likely only find them in the extreme southeastern corner of the state, in and along the Mississippi River, according to the Iowa DNR. It can be up to two feet long and weigh as much as 150 pounds. The alligator snapping turtle is the largest freshwater turtle in the United States.
