According to the folks at WalletHub, Iowans are pretty happy folk. Out of all 50 US states, in terms of happiness, we rank...

Number 11 overall.

We just missed out on being in the TOP 10, but 11 out of 50 isn't half bad, right?

So how did WalletHub come to this conclusion? Their methodology took into account the following factors:

  • Emotional & Physical Well-Being
  • Work Environment
  • Community & Environment

Iowa finished number 10 in both work and community environment, and number 16 in the emotional & physical well-being category. Not bad. And for Midwestern states, only Nebraska and Minnesota ranked higher overall. Iowa, however, ranked very high in longest term unemployment and highest volunteer rate.

The top 10 in state happiness is:

  1. Hawaii
  2. Utah
  3. Minnesota
  4. California
  5. New Jersey
  6. Idaho
  7. Massachusetts
  8. Maryland
  9. Nebraska
  10. Connecticut

The least happy states were (bottom three) Alaska, Arkansas and West Virginia.
