As our nation has been on guard for the past few weeks following the mutiny on the capital in Washington and leading up to the inauguration of a new President, it's being felt by the individual states as well. Leaders assure us they are aware of how the threats are going to affect us, or not, and are working tirelessly to secure every community they serve but especially the central hubs of their states' government, education, family life, healthcare, and culture to avoid further turmoil.

Here in Iowa, we can report that despite the ongoing uneasiness nationwide, we remain a place that has one of the best and safest capital cities in the U.S., according to a new survey conducted by WalletHub.

Before we get to where Des Moines ranked, here's what the website itself said about its findings:

In order to determine which state capitals make the best homes, WalletHub compared all 50 across 44 key indicators of affordability, economic well-being, quality of education and health, and quality of life. Our data set ranges from the cost of living to K–12 school-system quality to COVID-19 cases.

Des Moines' highest ranking in an individual category was at #4 for "Most Affordable Housing".

Des Moines was 5th for "Affordability", 22nd for "Economic Well-Being", 25th for "Quality of Education and Health" and 33rd for "Quality of Life", all adding up to an overall ranking in "2021's Best State Capitals for Safety and More"  at #14.

A few of our midwest neighbors did even better with the Top 5 capital cities being Austin, Texas; Madison, Wisconsin; Raleigh, North Carolina; Lincoln, Nebraska and Boise, Idaho.
