The death of a jail inmate is under investigation in Grundy County.

According to sheriff's officials, 39-year-old Ricky Sigler of Grundy Center suffered a medical issue shortly after being arrested late Wednesday afternoon. An ambulance rushed him to the hospital in Grundy Center, where he became unresponsive. Hospital medical staff performed life-saving procedures, but Sigler later died.

Sheriff's officials said Sigler was taken into custody around 4:30 PM following a traffic stop in Grundy Center. Deputies charged Sigler with third-offense operating while intoxicated (OWI) and third-offense possession of a controlled substance-marijuana.

The state medical examiner has scheduled an autopsy to determine the cause of Sigler's death.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the case, which is standard procedure with in-custody related deaths.
