A fire on the top-floor of a Cedar Falls apartment complex forced the evacuation of several residents from the three-story building at midday Thursday.
Public safety officials were dispatched to 3112 Boulder Drive shortly after noon to extinguish the fire. When they arrived, crews found a third-floor apartment on fire with significant smoke in the hallway.
Authorities said every resident was evacuated from the 88-unit complex, many of whom needed assistance due mobility issues. Several pets were also rescued from the burning building. According to public safety officials, one resident suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to a local hospital by paramedics. No other injuries were reported.
Cedar Falls public safety officials called a Metropolitan Transportation bus to the apartment complex to provide a warm location for the evacuated residents.
According to public safety officials, building maintenance people inspected the complex and are working with apartment managers to determine which units can be occupied. The Red Cross is helping displaced residents find alternate housing.
Also on Thursday, a West Union man was charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. Fayette County sheriff’s officials took 33-year-old Kyle Wurzer into custody following a two-week investigation.
Authorities did not release any details about the incident that led to the charges, including when and where it allegedly occurred.
Wurzer was booked into the Fayette County Jail.
Sheriff’s officials were assisted by the Iowa Department of Human Services.
