Funeral Services Set For Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith
Public funeral services are set for Sgt. James Smith, the Iowa State Patrol trooper who was fatally shot during a standoff in Grundy Center over the weekend.
Services will be held Friday at 10 AM at the Independence High School gymnasium. Visitation is Thursday from 3 to 8 PM at the Reiff Family Center-Funeral Home and Creamatory, 216 3rd Ave., also in Independence. Masks are required at the funeral service and visitation.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Sgt. Smith's family intends to establish a memorial scholarship in his memory. A memorial fund approved by the family has been established at BankIowa in Independence. Contributions to the official Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith Memorial Fund can be mailed or dropped off at either one of the following locations:

Sgt. Smith was a 27-year veteran of the Iowa State Patrol. He started his ISP career in Fairfield 1993. Sgt. Smith had been stationed out of the District 10 office in Oelwein since 1996.
Sgt. Smith is survived by his wife, Kathy, their two childen, Zander and Jazlyn, several other relatives and extended family members, and his brothers and sisters in blue.
