The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

The emotions of those who were involved in or watched Tuesday night's game between North Scott and Waterloo West, with a berth in the Boys State Basketball Tournament on the line, caught the attention of ESPN. The play was ranked No. 1 on the network's "Play of the Day".

Here's how the final frantic moments played out. With time running down and the score tied at 38-all, West's Daquavian Walker scored on a jumper from the right of the lane with about one second left on the clock to put the third-ranked Wahawks ahead 40-38.

North Scott immediately called time out, which allowed the Lancers to set up a final desperation play. With just six-tenths of a second remaining, Tytan Anderson caught a 70-foot pass in the air, came to his feet, then turned and drained a three-point shot near the wing to give fifth-ranked North Scott a 41-40 victory.

The dramatic final play stunned the Wahawks, who were playing for their first state trip since 2004. Instead, their season ended at 20-3.

The second game of the substate doubleheader was less frantic. Cedar Falls earned its fourth trip to state in five years with a 53-44 victory over Mississippi Valley Conference rival Dubuque Hempstead. The second-ranked Tigers are two-time defending state champions.
