Problems with the drainage system will keep the Byrnes Park Swimming Pool in Waterloo closed for the remainder of the 2019 season.

After delaying the scheduled June 1 opening due to a pipe break, city officials were hoping the facility would be in use this summer. The plan changed, however, after repair work began.

Serious deterioration of the main drainage system in the diving well was discovered. The work requires extensive repairs beyond the scope of original estimates, city officials said.

According to Waterloo Leisure Services Director Paul Huting, updates to the original cost estimate and schedule are being prepared with a targeted completion by the start of the 2020 season.

“Byrnes and Gates (Park) pools are almost 40 years old. They have well exceeded their life expectancies,” Huting said. “Our plans for the construction of new aquatic facilities will keep moving forward.”

Waterloo's two municipal pools were both built in 1981 with expected 20-year lifespans.

With the Byrnes Park facility being closed for the summer, extended hours will continue at the Gates Park and Cedar Valley SportsPlex swimming pools to accommodate the public. The schedules are as follows:
