Waterloo police have confirmed that the investigation into the recent death of a woman, whose body was discovered at a local cemetery, is now being treated as a homicide.

Investigators still have not released any information on the circumstances surrounding Lakisha Williams' death. Her body was found on the ground near a back road at Garden of Memories on Friday (Jan. 26, 2018).

The 40-year-old Waterloo woman was reported missing two days earlier. According to police, Williams hadn't been seen since around 5 PM on Jan. 20 near her home in the 3800 block of Paige Dr.

An autopsy was performed over the weekend, but the full report on the findings isn't yet available from the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny.

On Wednesday, Waterloo police confirmed the homicide investigation in a press release to the media. Authorities initially said Williams' death was being treated as suspicious.

In another development that appears to be related to the case, Williams' husband was arrested by police in St. Paul, Minn., on Saturday. Officers took Fredrick Williams, 27, into custody on a Black Hawk County warrant charging him with being a fugitive from justice. Authorities said Williams was returned to Waterloo earlier this week.

Waterloo police are asking the public for help in solving Lakisha Williams' death. Anyone with information should contact the department's Investigative Unit at 319-291-4340, Ext. 5003, or Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at 855-300-TIPS (8477).
