A Waterloo man was taken into custody on weapon and drug charges following a late-night traffic stop Monday in the city.

Police said London Moore, 22, was arrested for trafficking stolen weapons, carrying weapons and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. According to authorities, the drug charge was enhanced because Moore was in immediate possession of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a city park.

The traffic stop occurred just after 10:30 PM Monday near the intersection of Oaklawn Ave. and West Wellington Street, about a block away from Elks Memorial Park. Police said officers assigned to the Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT) were conducting a firearms investigation in Waterloo at the time of the traffic stop.

During the investigation, VCAT officers located a loaded handgun and narcotics concealed on one of the occupants of the vehicle. The handgun was identified as a Springfield XD 9mm that was reported stolen from a vehicle burglary in Waterloo, police said.

Records show Moore was later released from the Black Hawk County Jail. His trial is pending.
