A special election is being held to fill a vacant seat in the Iowa Senate on Tuesday (April 10, 2018).

Democrat Tracy Freese of Dike and Republican Annette Sweeney of Alden are the two candidates running in the District 25 race. Voters are deciding who will fill the seat that was previously occupied by William "Bill" Dix, a Shell Rock farmer.

Dix, a Republican who served as the Majority Leader, resigned from the senate nearly a month ago. He gave no explanation for his immediate departure from the chamber, but quit just hours after a video was posted online that appeared to show him kissing a female lobbyist at a Des Moines bar.

Gov. Kim Reynolds set April 10 as the election date. Senate District 25 includes Butler, Grundy, Hardin and Story counties.

Polls are open until 9 PM.
