The first phase of reconstruction work on a primary traffic route through downtown Waterloo is nearly finished. The southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 63 -- also known as Mullan Ave. -- are scheduled to reopen by noon on Monday (Nov. 20, 2017).

Mullan Ave. has been closed since May 1.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, motorists can expect lane closures in both directions of U.S. 63 south of the Cedar River bridge through Tuesday.

Northbound U.S. 63 -- also known as 1st Street -- between Jefferson and Franklin streets will return to northbound traffic only until next construction season, when that part of the highway will be reconstructed. There will be lane closures on 1st Street through Tuesday to remove the current paint markings for two-way traffic and put down new paint for one-way traffic.

U.S. 63 is also shut down for viaduct work between Dane and Newell streets in Waterloo. That part of the highway is scheduled to remain closed through Tuesday, IDOT officials said.
