Saturday Is Drug Take-Back Day
Several law enforcement agencies in Iowa are participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday (April 27, 2019).
Hours of the event are 10 AM to 2 PM at various locations. The list of most eastern Iowa drop-off sites is posted below.
Sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Drug Take-Back Day lets patients and their families dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Illicit substances such as marijuana are not part of this initiative. Injectable, IV solutions, inhalers and other compressed air cylinders will not be accepted. The DEA will not accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills and patches.
The Take-Back event addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. According to DEA, medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines -- flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash -- both pose potential safety and health hazards.
A year ago, the last Take-Back Day brought in more than 900,000 pounds of unused or expired prescription medication. Since the fall of 2010, the total amount collected by DEA is nearly 10.9 million pounds.
