There is a possibility of moderate flooding along the Cedar River in Black Hawk County this week following recent periods of heavy rain the Cedar Valley and other parts of Northeast Iowa.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood warning for the river at Cedar Falls until early Saturday morning (June 27, 2015). The Cedar is expected to rise about 2.4 feet above flood stage Thursday evening, before cresting. The river is forecast to reach flood stage Wednesday afternoon and go below flood stage early Saturday morning.

According to the NWS, the river stage at Cedar Falls was 85.0 feet or 3.0 feet below flood stage at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday. No flooding was occurring, but moderate flooding was forecast.

The river is expected to reach 90.4 feet before cresting. At that stage, water covers Riverside Drive south of Beech Street.

Upstream from Cedar Falls in Floyd County, a flood warning continues for the Cedar River at Charles City through Thursday afternoon. Minor flooding is expected there.

At 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, the river was nearly two-feet over its 12-foot flood stage. The river level was at 13.9 feet and minor flooding was occurring. The Cedar is expected to continue falling throughout the day and drop below flood stage Wednesday evening.
