UPDATE - 11:45 AM (March 29, 2021): Officials at Iowa State University have confirmed that the body of a missing student has been recovered from a Hamilton County lake following a weekend boating accident that left another student dead.

According to information posted on the university's website, divers recovered the body Monday morning.

According to an ISU press release, five members of the Iowa State Crew Club were practicing on Little Wall Lake south of Jewell Sunday when their boat capsized. The mishap occurred around 9:30 AM.

School and Hamilton County sheriff’s officials said rescuers pulled three students from the water and a dive team later recovered the body of a student. Authorities spent the day searching for the fifth student, but they suspended operations Sunday evening.

The body of the fifth student was recovered after search operations resumed Monday morning.

University officials said the rescued students were all taken to an Ames hospital. They confirmed the students were all treated and released.

Iowa State University President Wendy Wintersteen released the following statement on the mishap:

The Iowa State community is heartbroken to learn of this tragic accident at Little Wall Lake. At this time, we are focused on providing support to club members, their families and friends. We ask that everyone keep them in their thoughts during this very difficult time.

On behalf of the university community, I want to thank the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Story County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State University Police Department, Jewel Fire and Rescue, Gilbert Fire, Stratford Fire and Rescue, Mary Greeley Medical Center and community members for their response and continued search efforts.

In the press release, university officials said the Iowa State Crew Club is a recognized student organization.

The names of the students involved in the accident were not immediately released.

Little Wall Lake is located  about 20 miles north of Ames.
