An on-going highway project will force the closure of a busy Waterloo street for several weeks after the Labor Day holiday weekend.

A segment of Franklin St. between East First St. and East Mullan Ave. is scheduled to close on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, beginning at 8 AM.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the street closure is part of the U.S. Highway 63 reconstruction project that's currently underway from Franklin to Jefferson streets. IDOT officials said the closure is required to allow for the replacement of underground utilities, lighting, signals, sidewalks and pavement reconstruction.

The project plans call for Franklin St. to be closed until mid-November, weather permitting. IDOT officials said signs will be used to direct traffic around the construction zone.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured onto East Mullan Ave., Lafayette St. and East Park Ave. Westbound traffic will use East Third St., Lafayette St. and East Mullan Ave.
