If next summer's Northwoods League season begins on time, the Waterloo Bucks will be playing baseball on Memorial Day for the first time in franchise history.

League officials released Waterloo's 2021 schedule Monday afternoon. The 72-game slate shows the Bucks opening their 27th season on Monday, May 31, with a road game at Duluth.

The Bucks have opened their recent seasons one or two days after Memorial Day, but typically there are four Mondays in May. The month has five Mondays in 2021.

The scheduled season-opening date is the latest for Waterloo in more than a decade, not counting 2020. This past summer, the Bucks played 41 games under a revised "pod" schedule that limited travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. The coronavirus outbreak delayed the start of Waterloo's season from May 26 to July 1. The Bucks closed their summer campaign by winning the Minnesota-Iowa Region championship on the final day.

Previously, the latest start for Waterloo playing a regular-season schedule of 70 games or more was in 2010. That season, they opened on June 2.

Waterloo's 2021 schedule features 36-home games at Riverfront Stadium. The Bucks begin the campaign with a three-game road trip prior to their June 3 home-opener against the Rochester Honkers.
