Another special election will be needed to fill an at-large city council seat in Cedar Falls.

None of the five candidates on the ballot in Tuesday's special election received a simple majority of the votes, so a run-off election will determine the winner. The top two vote-getters will square-off on Aug. 4, Black Hawk County election officials said.

Unofficial results show LeaAnn Saul received the most support in Tuesday's election, with 35 percent of the voters casting their ballots in her favor. Kelly Dunn finished second with 28 percent support.

Here are the unofficial results:

  • LeaAnn Saul - 2,257 votes (34.78%)
  • Kelly Dunn - 1,836 votes (28.29%)
  • T.J. Frein - 1,639 votes (25.25%)
  • Penny Popp - 455 votes (7.01%)
  • Fred Perryman - 287 votes (4.42%)
  • Write-ins - 16 votes (0.25%)

According to figures released by the Black Hawk County Auditor's Office, only 800 in-person votes were cast at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center polling site. Election officials said they counted 5,708 absentee ballots, which was a record number.

Until a winner is chosen next month, Nick Taiber will remain on the city council. He was appointed to fill the at-large seat in January after Rob Green was sworn-in as mayor.
