Branstad To Visit Greene, Charles City [Gallery]

Gov. Terry Branstad and other state officials will be surveying more flood damage in northeast Iowa on Monday (Sept. 26, 2016).

Iowa’s top-elected official has announced plans to tour water-logged Charles City and Greene, two communities in the process of cleaning up damage caused by major flooding over the past few days. Branstad plans to spend an hour visiting each community.

The Governor will be in Charles City from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., then is scheduled to visit Greene from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Branstad will be joined on the tour by Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.

The trips to Charles City and Greene follow similar visits to Clarksville and Shell Rock, where Branstad and Reynolds toured flood-damaged areas on Saturday (See photos below). They were joined on the tour by Iowa National Guard Adjutant General Tim Orr and Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Mark Schouten.

On Monday, Branstad added four counties -- Cerro Gordo, Hancock, Mitchell and Worth -- to the disaster emergency declaration he signed last week. On Friday, the Governor issued a proclamation of disaster emergency for 13 counties: Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cedar, Chickasaw, Delaware, Floyd, Franklin, Linn and Wright.

The Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is coordinating the delivery of state resources to the affected areas.

Resources that have been provided include:

• More than 180,000 sandbags (4 dump truck loads of sand)
• 27 water pumps and hoses
• 65 pallets of flood barriers, equal to 4,320 linear feet
• 50 traffic barricades
• Assistance to local law enforcement
• 7 members of Iowa’s Incident Management Team to assist with response operations in Linn County
• 680 flood clean-up kits
• 10 dump trucks
• 400 National Guard troops deployed to assist in flood response and recovery
• 1 communications trailer to help responders communicate
• 1 portable shower trailer unit
• 3 pallets of bottled water

The state officials continue to work with local officials in northern and eastern Iowa to assist with planning, and provide them with resources as they prepare for the potential flooding.
