Some road construction projects are scheduled to get underway in the Cedar Valley on Monday (May 22, 2017).

One project will impact traffic using Shaulis Road on the southern edge of Waterloo, where the intersection at Iowa Highway 21 (Hawkeye Road) will be closed for several hours for pavement repairs..

A traffic safety project was completed in 2016 to add traffic signals and left-turn lanes at the intersection, which is one mile south of U.S. Highway 20. During construction, a small section of new pavement was damaged in the southbound lane that now needs to be patched.

The work is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Monday, weather permitting. According to the Iowa Department of Transportion (IDOT), the project requires closing Shaulis Road at Iowa 21 for one day.

Traffic impact:

  • Iowa 21 through traffic will be maintained, but both sides of Shaulis Road will be closed until the work is complete.
  • Signals will be placed in yellow-flashing mode at the intersection during the road repair work.

Also starting Monday, two city streets will be closed in Cedar Falls.

E. 2nd St. will be blocked off from State St. to the alley west, approximately halfway to Main St., due to the construction of a new building. City officials said crews are beginning the process of installing underground utilities, which will require the portion closure of E. 2nd St. for up to three weeks. Access to the parking lots off E. 2nd St. will remain open from State St, while access to the alley will be available from Main St.

According to city officials, work unrelated to the building project has caused a closure adjacent to 202 Main Street.

The other city street scheduled to close Monday is Loren Dr. between Ashworth and Algonquin Drives, south of Greenhill Road. Weather permitting, the road will be closed approximately two weeks for workers to remove and replace concrete paving. Greenhill Park will remain open for use.
