No. 15 Wartburg, Coe Battle For American Rivers Championship
The American Rivers Conference championship race has come down to the final weekend of the regular season.
No. 15 Wartburg hosts Coe in a three-game series that will determine the league title. The Knights (25-6 overall, 16-5 ARC) and Kohawks (21-10 overall, 16-5 ARC) square off in a doubleheader Friday at 3 PM and a single game Saturday at 1 PM at Lynes Field in Waverly.
Whichever teams wins the best-of-three series claims the championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's American Rivers Conference (ARC) Tournament. The series winner also gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, due to a change in this year's league tournament format.
Wartburg is seeking its fourth regular-season conference title and first since 2008. Winners of six-straight, the Knights are coming off a three-game series at Loras in which they outscored the Duhawks 30-3.
Last weekend in Dubuque, senior first baseman Kaci Sherwood compiled a .714 batting average with five hits in seven at-bats. Sherwood broke Wartburg's single-season home run record when she hit her 15th of the season. The home run was Sherwood's 10th in conference games, which also established a new ARC single-season record.
Sherwood (Milo, Iowa) leads a Wartburg offense that's hitting .323 as a team. Individually, she is batting .449 and third baseman Leah Campos (Diamond, Ill.) is hitting .404.
Sophomore catcher Skyler Stookey (Solon, Iowa) leads the Coe offense with a .449 batting average. The Kohawks have won four-straight league games, but they were swept in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Washington University in St. Louis.
Coe, which is receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, is seeking its sixth regular-season conference championship and first since 2018.
The loser of the series will be the No. 2 seed in the ARC Tournament, which will split into two-pods. As the top seeds in the tournament, Wartburg and Coe will each host games starting Wednesday and continue through Saturday.
