No Spring Football Games For Wartburg
Wartburg won't be playing any football games this spring. That's not how the unique season was supposed to be for the Knights.
When the American Rivers Conference announced the 2021 spring schedule in November, each of the nine members teams were slated to play at least three league games starting in late March. However, COVID-19 protocols will keep Wartburg from competing until fall.
The Knights were supposed to open their spring schedule at home on March 27, hosting arch-rival Luther at Walston-Hoover Stadium in Waverly. Their next game was at Dubuque on April 3. Both games were canceled just days before the season opener, due to health concerns associated with the pandemic.
Wartburg officials were hoping Saturday's open date would factor favorably in helping the Knights prepare for this week's scheduled game against Loras. It turns out, more time was needed to get the team healthy.
On Wednesday, Wartburg athletic officials announced that the Knights' game against the Duhawks in Dubuque has also been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols at Wartburg. None of the Wartburg's three canceled games will be rescheduled, conference and school officials said.
