Three people died and two were injured in separate northeast Iowa accidents over the Labor Day weekend.

One of the victims was a Guttenberg man, who was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a flying kayak in Allamakee County.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 75-year-old John Thein was traveling southbound on County Road X-26 near Rossville Sunday morning. Thein was approaching a southbound pickup truck pulling a trailer loaded with kayaks when one of the kayaks separated from the trailer, went airborne, and struck Thein's motorcycle.

Thein died at the scene. The other driver, who authorities identified as 69-year-old Andrew Wroble of Harpers Ferry, was not injured.

The other deadly accident happened in Floyd County Saturday afternoon.

The Iowa State Patrol said 77-year-old Chris Andersen and 76-year-old Anita Andersen, both of Mason City, were killed when an oncoming vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with their vehicle head-on. The occupants of the other vehicle were 28-year-old Casey Lindahl of Charles City and a 3-year-old child, both of whom suffered minor injuries.

The head-on crash happened on a county road west of Colwell just after 2 PM.

Both accidents remain under investigation, the Iowa State Patrol said.
