Authorities are investigating a two-vehicle accident that left three people dead and sent three others to the hospital in Cedar Falls late Friday afternoon (Jan. 12, 2017).

Several agencies responded the scene near the intersection of E. Viking Road and Winterberry Dr. just after 5 p.m.

Cedar Falls police said the three people who died were ejected from a westbound car that was going at a high rate of speed on Viking Road. The car went out of control, crossed the center line, and collided head-on with an eastbound sport utility vehicle. Three people inside the SUV suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to two area hospitals for treatment.

According to police, both vehicles sustained major damage in the crash. The impact split the car in half and left debris scattered across the pavement.

Authorities did not immediately release the names of those killed or injured in the accident, which remains under investigation. The Iowa State Patrol is conducting the probe.

Cedar Falls police and fire crews were assisted at the scene by Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies, University of Northern Iowa police and the Iowa State Patrol.
