The race for Iowa's U.S. House District 1 seat is over. Republican Ashley Hinson was declared the victor by the AP. Despite giving a live acceptance speech on her social media late night, Hinson was not declared the winner until today. Shortly after, Finkenauer released a concession on her Twitter.

In 2018 Finkenauer flipped the republican led 1st district blue by defeating Rod Blum in a tight race. Fast forward to last night and the results show another tight race with Hinson winning with 51 percent of votes and Finkenauer coming in second with 49 percent of votes. The district has an estimated population of just over 773,000 residents, and spans 20 Iowa counties. Hinson will assume office on January 3, 2021.
