Powerball is Nearing ½ a BILLION $$$ for Saturday night's drawing. How Many Iowans Have Won the Powerball Jackpot?
Saturday night's estimated Jackpot (as of 9/16/21) is $457 million -- which would place it as the 11th highest Powerball Jackpot ever.
The largest Powerball jackpot won in Iowa so far was in October 2018. Lerynne West of Redfield claimed a $343.9 million Powerball prize. That winning ticket split the $687.8 million Powerball jackpot in the drawing with a ticket purchased in New York.
Powerball sales began in Iowa in 1992 and is currently played in 44 states. (It is also played in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.) Since October 7, 2015, the game has used 69 white balls with 26 red ‘Powerballs’ from which winning numbers are chosen, resulting in odds of 1 in 292,201,338 of winning the jackpot per play. Users choose five white ball numbers and one red Powerball number per ticket.
To date, 45 Iowans have won $1 million or more playing Powerball – this number includes non-jackpot winners. Iowa has been the home of NINE Powerball jackpot winners. Indiana has had the most jackpot winners with nearly 40.
Four states have NEVER had a Powerball jackpot winner: Maine, North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming.
From its inaugural drawing on April 19, 1992, until August 21, 2021, Powerball drawings were held twice a week (Wednesday and Saturday); a third weekly drawing (Mondays) was added on August 23, 2021. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evening at 9:59 p.m. The official cutoff for ticket sales on drawing nights is at 9 PM.
