Grundy County authorities are investigating a fiery single-vehicle accident that killed the driver.

The crash happened Tuesday, just before 4:30 AM, at the U.S. Highway 20/Iowa Highway 14 interchange about seven miles north of Grundy Center.

According to sheriff's officials, the vehicle was going north on Iowa 14 and drove off the right side of the highway. The vehicle struck an Iowa Department of Transportation sign and slammed into a cement pillar of the US 20 overpass, then caught fire.

Authorities said the driver died at the scene. The identity of the victim was not immediately released.

According to sheriff's officials, the accident remains under investigation.

Grundy Center Ambulance, Grundy Center Fire, the Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa Iowa State Patrol all assisted Grundy County sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
