Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation In Waterloo

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in downtown Waterloo early Wedenesday.

The incident happened around 12:45 AM near the intersection of West 6th and Commercial Streets. According to Waterloo police, someone called the Black Hawk County dispatch center and reported that a man with a long gun was walking along Commerical Street toward downtown.

A short time later, two sheriff's deputies spotted the man walking on the 6th Street bridge that crosses the Cedar River. According to information released by Waterloo police, the deputies made contact with the armed man. The suspect then pointed the weapon at hip level toward one of the deputies and chased after the deputy.

Authorities said a responding Waterloo police officer observed what was occurring and fired at the man, striking him twice.

The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was later transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Authorities did not identify the man or release his condition, though his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Waterloo police said the officer and sheriff's deputies were not injured.
