Residents of Oelwein may notice local police officers canvassing neighborhoods in an effort to help clean up the city.

Authorities are now checking for nuisance abatement violations. The canvas began Sunday.

Officers are checking each of the city's four quadrants. They will then notify a property owner if their land needs to be picked up or cleaned up.

If the problem is not addressed within a certain time period, the land owner would be cited.

Some of the violations police are looking for include: garbage, tree branches and yard waste, old appliances, junk vehicles, and dilapidated furniture.
