Man Kills Himself After Standoff With Waterloo Police
A police stand-off near two Waterloo schools Thursday ended with an apparent suicide.
Officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 400 block of Hilltop Road just before 1:30 PM. In a press release, Waterloo police said the initial call indicated that a man inside the home was armed and acting in a threatening manner.
According to police, one person was able to get out of the home safely, but a teenage boy and the armed man remained inside. After officers arrived, they were able to establish communication with the man and the teenager was released without incident. Then, the standoff began.
During the incident, officials implemented a "soft lockdown" of nearby Hoover Intermediate and Lou Henry Elementary Schools. As a precaution, administrators held students inside both facilities at dismissal time until parents could pick them up.
Police said the standoff ended when communication between the man and negotiators eventually stopped. According to police, a tactical team entered the home around 6 PM and found the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities did not immediately identify the man. According to police, circumstances surrounding the standoff remain under investigation.
