Iowa's oldest school is Loras College. Located in Dubuque the school was founded by Mathias Loras in 1839.

It is widely considered to be Iowa's very first university and was even established seven whole years before the Hawkeye State was established.

A Little About Loras

Located in Dubuque, Loras College is a private, liberal arts Catholic College.

The college recently was ranked the fourth best college in the state for student life. Also, it is considered the twenty-eighth best bachelor's college in the nation and is ranked number twelve on the list of best regional Midwest colleges.

In addition, Loras is amongst a prestigious group of the top twenty-five Catholic Colleges in America. They have a student body of approximately 1,600.

If you do end up paying a visit to Loras, remember to cheer for their mascot the Duhawk! It's a combination of "Dubuque" and "Hawk."
