An inmate serving a life sentence for a murder he committed in Waterloo has died in a state prison.

In a press release, Iowa Department of Corrections officials said they believe that 80-year-old Ronald Brown committed suicide Wednesday at the Clarinda Correctional Facility. He was pronounced dead around 9:35 AM.

Court records show Brown began serving his life sentence on Oct. 31, 1983, after being convicted of first-degree murder in Black Hawk County. Brown was one of two men found guilty of killing Alvin Davidson, a Waterloo attorney.

Davidson was fatally shot on Jan. 10, 1983, while he was walking into the Russell Lamson Hotel. According to court records, Brown used a 12-gauge shotgun to kill Davidson.

Brown's death is under investigation by the Iowa Department of Corrections, which is standard procedure for all suspected suicides in the state prison system.
