Kurt Warner’s Son Set to Start at QB for Temple as a Freshman
Earlier this year, we shared that Kurt Warner's son, Elijah (EJ), committed to play quarterback for the Temple Owls. He made his decision in January, and now entering week three of the 2022 football season, he's their starting quarterback.
Just a game and a quarter into his freshman campaign in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Elijah entered the game against Lafayette after an empty possession and two fumbles by starting quarterback D'Wan Mathis. On his first drive as the Owls' QB, EJ launched a 15-yard ball to the corner of the endzone for the first passing touchdown of his collegiate career.
In Lafayette's next possession, they had a punt blocked that set up Temple to score once again, this time on a nine-yard run by running back Edward Saydee. The Owls took a 21-7 lead into halftime.
Before the end of the contest, Elijah threw yet another touchdown pass to a wide-open tight end Jordan Smith over the middle for another 17-yard score. He finished the game with 14 completed passes for 173 yards, two touchdowns, and zero turnovers. The Owls won 30-14.

This is what first-year head coach at Temple, Stan Drayton said about EJ following the win:
Both his accuracy and his poise have stood out for a while now. ... (We have) a competitive environment (at Temple), and he thrived today.
Prior to the game against Lafayette, he was taking the reps as the backup at quarterback. As to if he'll be the starter going forward, this is what Drayton had to say:
You may be a starter for three quarters of a football game, but every day you have to go and earn that.
But, as shared today -- at least according to EJ's mom and Kurt's wife Brenda -- he'll be their starter against Rutgers this coming Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field. The game is scheduled for 1 PM central time and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
So far, Rutgers is 2-0 after wins against Boston College (22-21) and Wagner (66-7).
