Near $100 Million Given To Boy Injured At Birth In Iowa Hospital

A young boy's family is getting nearly $100 million after a dangerous injury at an Iowa City hospital.

This Iowa family can take a shaky sigh of relief after being awarded a huge sum of money after a heartbreaking case concerning their three-year-old son. Several years ago parents Kathleen and Andrew Kromphardt welcomed their son into the world at Mercy Hospital Iowa City.

They claimed that the treatment of their child during the time of his birth resulted in serious brain damage that will affect him for the rest of his life.

In the 14-day trial, the Kromphardts' attorney argued that the medical staff at the hospital failed to act when there were clear signs that the infant was being deprived of oxygen in the hours leading up to the birth, according to reports.

They also claim that due to these signs, the baby should have been delivered via cesarean section.

The family won this case, and the judge awarded the family the $97.4 million settlement on Monday, March 21st.

One of the family's attorneys  Fred James says this could be one of the biggest malpractice settlements in Iowan history. 

According to reports, as a result of the injury, this 3-year-old cannot walk by himself, has other possible cognitive issues, and will probably need 24-hour-care for the rest of his life.  This $98 million award will go to cover the lifetime of medical care that he will require.

Both the hospital and doctor continue to deny any sort of wrongdoing on their part.
