Thinking About Mowing a Roadside? Linn County Says Wait
The spring rain and now warming temperatures have yards and grass growing quickly! But Linn County residents need to remember that the law prevents them from mowing in one area until later this summer.
Roadside Mowing in Linn County
CBS2 reports that officials in Linn County are reminding residents that mowing roadside vegetation is not allowed by law until July 15th. The restriction applies to primary highways, interstates, and secondary roads. Limited mowing is allowed for safety, visibility, and weed control. CBS2 reports that other exceptions to the law include;
- Areas within 200 yards of a residence
- Areas within one mile of a city limit
- Efforts to support native plant growth
- Control of harmful insects, noxious weeds, or invasive species
- Work needed for safety and visibility
- Maintenance in rest areas, weigh stations, and wayside parks
- Areas within 50 feet of drainage tiles or intakes
- Access to mailboxes or other entry points
- Areas adjacent to agricultural research or demonstration plots
Why is Roadside Mowing Prohibited Until July 15th?
CBS2 reports that officials say the law is in place to help protect birds and other wildlife that rely on roadside areas during the nesting season. Many species, including game birds and songbirds, nest on the ground in spring and early summer. Young birds then need time to mature before they leave the nest.
