Iowa’s Flu Rate High, But Doctors Warn it Could Get Worse
If the holidays are described as 'the most wonderful time of the year', the days after the holiday season are often described as the sickest. People getting back from holiday gatherings spread germs they picked up, and all of a sudden, you've got peak flu season.
Flu Rates in Iowa Continue to Rise
KCCI reports that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified Iowa's flu activity as 'high' for the first time this season. Doctors across the state confirm that they have seen both an increase in cases and severity. Several doctors told KCCI that they have seen several patients with double pneumonia, which is the flu with pneumonia on top of that.
The Worst Could Still Be to Come
CDC data shows that Iowa's flu rate rose from low to moderate to high in just two weeks, according to KCCI. That upward trend in Iowa is happening across the nation as well. Despite the high numbers, medical experts fear that the peak of flu season in Iowa likely has not occurred.
What to Do If You Get the Flu
Doctors recommend getting the flu vaccine. While it may not prevent you from getting the flu, it can reduce symptoms. KCCI reports that if you do get the flu, you can take prescribed antiviral medication like Tamiflu. Tylenol and Motrin can also be used to help treat flu-like symptoms.
If you do get the flu this season, you can also try and isolate yourself from family members and stay home from work to prevent spreading the virus.
