Iowa Joins Lawsuit Accusing Dollar General of Overcharging Customers
Dollar General stores have popped up all over the nation, including here in Iowa. Many times, they are the only retail option for residents in smaller communities. That's why accusations that the company is overcharging customers for everyday necessities have made so many people upset. Count the state of Iowa among them.
Iowa Joins Lawsuit Against Dollar General
The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is joining the Federal Trade Commission and 19 other states in a lawsuit that accuses Dollar General of charging customers more for products than advertised and doing nothing to address the issue. The FTC stated that for years Dollar General has "mislabelled prices, overcharged consumers, and failed to correct the issue" despite corporate knowledge of the practice. There are over 20,000 Dollar General stores in the United States, and 348 in Iowa.
Thousands of Complaints From Across The Nation
The Register reports that there have been thousands of complaints about Dollar General from customers across the nation. Attorney General Bird stated that the company has "made millions by charging more at the register than the prices they have marked on the shelf." Since 2019, Dollar General has paid $6 million in settlements with six states over inaccurate pricing, according to the Register.
The Register reports that representatives of Dollar General could not be reached for comment on the new federal charges.
