While Iowa is widely considered one of the safest states in the nation, when it comes to crashes in school zones the opposite is true.

A new ranking was compiled by injury lawyers Bader-Scott based off of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It determines the worst states in the country for crashes in school zones.

They determined the number of vehicle crashes that occurred in school zones from 2014 to 2021.

"This study is a clear indication of the most dangerous states in the U.S. for pedestrians and cyclists in school zones," an official from Bader Scott said regarding the findings in the study.

"...the number of people in the state is irrelevant when it comes to fatalities in school areas."

According to the data from this study, the state of Wyoming has the worst school zone crash rates in the entire country. Approximately 2.94% of pedestrians and cyclists have been involved in some sort of crash in these areas in Wyoming.

Connecticut came in at number two on this list with a 2.38% school zone crash pedestrian rate. The Hawkeye State is right behind them.

Iowa is a popular state for bicyclists, so it's no surprise that the state is pretty high up on this list. Over the course of seven years, Iowa officials have witnessed five pedestrians and one cyclist fatally injured after a crash in a school zone. The percentage for crashes like this here is about 2.25%.

Over the course of the study (2014-2021) Arkansas, Idaho, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Washington had no pedestrians and/or cyclists involved in any crashes in a school zone.
