My fellow Iowan... my fellow American the season is upon us. It's not autumn. No, not summer. It's not fair season, as that is winding down. No, no - it's Pumpkin Spice SEASON! What's that you say? "GROSS"? "NASTY"? "DISGUSTING"? Shush. The pumpkin spice time period is the most American... thing ever. It's also a celebration of the Midwest, and we should celebrate it.

Why you should LOVE all things pumpkin spice

Let me get this out there first and foremost: I do not like the taste of pumpkin spice products. Most, anyway. The lattes are WAY too sugary, the pumpkin beers I've tried are no good, and if it's not part of a pie, I have little time for it. (Side note, pumpkin spice Cheerios are solid) That said, I respect the season, as you should too.

Here is why:

  • It's a symbol of a midwestern fall. Leaves changing and a new, cooler season beginning.
  • It celebrates our farmers - as pumpkin spice season is most associated with early fall, our amazing farmers are out partaking in harvests, ending a hopefully successful season.
  • It is, in a way, the start of the holiday season. Who doesn't love the holidays? Cold, sad folks THAT is who.

Iowans DO love pumpkin spice products

According to a 2020 article from the professional guessers at Zippia, Iowans are in the #10 state for pumpkin spice lovin'. Fellow Midwestern states North Dakota, Kansas, and Missouri also cracked the top 10 - good folks, good folks. You can see how all 50 states ranked below. Mississippi came in dead last because, well, Mississippi.

So break out the orange and get your gourd game going, it's pumpkin spice season. Love or hate pumpkin spice products, you have to at least love the season itself. I know I do. Anyone up for a bonfire? We can dump some of that pumpkin beer in it.
