More Iowans are getting food delivered than ever before. COVID kicked off a new trend in supporting local and nation eateries, and that's continued as people have begun dining out in public again.

Apps like Uber Eats, GrubHub and DoorDash have made their way to thousands of Iowa screens, like mine, and have no doubt increased profits for themselves. So why are Iowa lawmakers now possibly set to face new restrictions in the Hawkeye State? It actually stems from numerous Iowa restaurants' complaints about their services.

Iowa lawmakers have issues with food delivery services

Food safety is at the center of the discussion Iowa lawmakers are having about third-party delivery companies. KCCI reports that drivers simply not following food safety guidelines is a major concern for Iowa restaurants. House Study Bill 688 aims to set statewide standards for Iowa food delivery vehicles. Under House Study Bill 688 delivery drivers would not be allowed to smoke or vape. They would be restricted from having pets or any passengers with them when they make deliveries as well.

In addition, all food delivery companies would be required to have a contract with the restaurant they are delivering for as currently, restaurants can be added to a delivery app without the restaurant's permission.

The KCCI report says Jessica Dunker, who is the President of the Iowa Restaurant Association, says of the bill,

We think it's important to protect consumers so that they know that when they order off an app that the restaurant knows the delivery service, but also that there aren't animals in the car when they bring you the food. That people aren't smoking in the car. That they aren't picking up passengers in between and delivering them along the way

So how do you feel about this proposal? I, personally, think it's a great idea to tighten regulations on delivery services and hold them to the same health standards our Iowa eateries are held to.
