Gladbrook-Reinbeck Making Return Trip To Semifinals
Gladbrook-Reinbeck passed its first test at the 2017 Boys State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines.
The fourth-ranked Rebels survived a tough battle with fifth-ranked Lynnville-Sully and came away with a 53-50 victory over the Hawks in the opening Class 1A quarterfinal on Monday morning (March 6, 2017).
Senior Joe Smoldt scored a game-high 29 points and junior Caden Kickbush added 12 to propel Gladbrook-Reinbeck into the semifinals for a third-straight year. Smoldt, who's committed to Upper Iowa and leads the state in scoring at 30.5 points per game, tallied all but seven of his team's first half points, as the Rebels built a 24-17 advantage at intermission.
Kickbush was clutch down the stretch for Gladbrook-Reinbeck. He scored nine of his 12 points in the pivotal fourth quarter, when Lynnville-Sully took its first lead of the game after erasing a nine-point deficit. Kickbush hit a key three-pointer and went 4-for-4 at the free throw line over the final eight minutes of the game.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck won the game, despite being dominated on the boards. Lynnville-Sully out-rebounded the Rebels 44-22, but also committed 18 turnovers against the Rebels' seven.
Brevin Hansen and Jesse Van Wyk each scored 15 points to led Lynnville-Sully, which ends its season at 24-2.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck will take a 25-2 mark into the semifinals at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday (March 9).
