The Waterloo Columbus high school volleyball team advanced to the Iowa High School Volleyball State Tournament thanks to a 3-1 win over Sumner-Fredricksburg.

Sumner-Fredricksburg dominated the early going in Game 1. The Cougars kept the pressure on Waterloo Columbus. The Sailors were able to regroup and close in towards the end, but their charge fell short losing 25-23.

It was Waterloo Columbus that had the strong start in Game 2, but Sumner-Fredricksburg marched back into the game. The two teams swapped volleys and serves. Columbus eventually worked out to a 23-20 lead, but Sumner-Fredricksburg battled back to force a 25-25 tie. The Sailors finally closed Game 2 with a 29-27 win.

The Sailors kept the momentum up as Game 3 got underway. Sumner-Fredricksburg fought back and took a four-point lead. The Sailors rallied to tie things up at 19. They kept the charge rolling slowly pulling away to a 25-20 win.

Game 4 saw several volleys that several momentum shifts between the two teams. With the game knotted up at 18-18, The Sailors started to pull away to net the 25-20 Game 4 match win.

The Cougars end their great season at 33-6. Waterloo Columbus sails into the semifinals on Thursday (4:00 PM, Court 2) against Unity Christian (35-4).
